Shavkat Rakhmonov Views Islam Makhachev as Toughest Welterweight Matchup

Islam Makhachev may have had only two welterweight encounters, but Shavkat Rakhmonov feels he has seen enough to label Makhachev his most challenging opponent. Currently recovering from a serious knee injury, Rakhmonov also offered his prediction on how the reigning welterweight champion might rate his pedigree.

Rakhmonov's knee issues worsened after his UFC 310 fight against Ian Machado Garry, leading to his hiatus just after he entered the title shot scenario. Following double surgery on his left knee, 'Nomad' isn't expected to return before the advent of 2027.

However, Rakhmonov's words during his conversation with Alfredo Auditore on the ALF Global podcast revealed that he hasn't given up on his title shot aspirations. Considering Makhachev's current reign over the division, the Kazakh fighter opined that the Dagestani looked much "stronger" at welterweight.

Rakhmonov assessed a potential title fight with Makhachev and implied that he would be the Dagestani's toughest challenge at welterweight. He said, "I think I am the most serious rival for Islam."

Additionally, Rakhmonov highlighted that Makhachev's skills, in turn, would make him his biggest test. "For me, it is also the most serious rival," mentioned 'Nomad.'

But while Rakhmonov counted Makhachev as his toughest opponent, he sounded confident about having the last laugh in their potential encounter. The Kazakhstani rated himself to be far ahead of the Dagestani in a certain aspect of the game.

'Nomad' said, "Yes, I will defend myself well. I think my stances are better than Islam's. The fight will show, but this is my opinion."

With Rakhmonov possibly set to return in 2027, Makhachev will have to hold onto the title for the materialization of this encounter. However, the road isn't going to be easy for him, especially since rated contenders like Carlos Prates and Michael Morales are waiting in line.
