Jon Anik feels Ian Garry won’t get another immediate shot at the UFC welterweight gold.
Ian Garry made a lot of buzz ahead of his bout against Islam Makhachev. Unfortunately, despite all his talking, it all came to nothing as it was the Dagestani who held onto the welterweight gold. Now, trying to work a way around to fight for the championship, Jon Anik had some bad news.
Jon Anik Predicts Tough Path to Glory for Ian Garry
Looking at how Garry’s bout against Makhachev panned out, Anik is not sure if the Irish fighter will get another shot at the UFC gold soon. In fact, he thinks that Garry will have to work extremely hard to earn a second shot to win the welterweight belt.
Anik stated, “Ian Machado Garry's going to have to win a main event to get back to a championship fight, at the VERY LEAST.”
During the fight, there were moments when Garry looked menacing. He also managed to win a round against the Dagestani icon. But one thing that did not sit well with the critics was Garry over-respecting Makhachev. His gestures of repeatedly hugging his opponent after each round made critics like Anik and co. question his killer instinct.
Islam Makhachev, Too, Was Not a Fan of Ian Garry Hugging Him
Garry landed some impressive body kicks and also managed to make Makhachev bleed from his face, yet, his body language inside the octagon seemingly left a lot to be desired. Reflecting on the same, the Dagestani fighter, too, stated that Garry’s antics were quite frustrating.
“Honestly, I don’t understand. This is a fight. This is not something we have to hug each other every round. We’re going to war. We’re going to break the face, to break the eye. I respect all my opponents. But. He respects too much,” Makhachev said.
There have been a lot of negative words about Garry’s respectful gestures. Now, will he change his tactics is the big question the UFC realm is waiting to find an answer to.
