Zabit Magomedsharipov has dismissed Umar Nurmagomedov’s brutal knockout loss to Song Yadong at UFC Shanghai as a “lucky punch.”

Song Yadong left everyone shocked in the main event of UFC Shanghai on August 29. Yadong, who entered the bout against Umar Nurmagomedov as an underdog, pulled the biggest upset of the year by knocking out the Dagestani out cold in the second round.

The right uppercut of Yadong that landed on Umar's head behind the ear was enough to knock the Dagestani star unconscious. While many praised the Chinese for timing it perfectly, former UFC fighter Zabit Magomedsharipov dismissed the loss of Umar by calling it a lucky punch.

Magomedsharipov, who is set to face Youssef Zalal in a submission grappling match at ACBJJ 22, was asked about Umar's brutal knockout loss to Yadong in the pre-event presser.

The former UFC featherweight dismissed the idea that the knockout represents a major problem for Umar. He insisted that such a result can happen to any fighter. He also suggested that the Dagestani star was well prepared for the contest and viewed the finishing shot as a matter of bad luck.

“I believe Umar will be back. I see no problem there. Anyone can experience that. IT is what it is. I think it was bad luck. He was well prepared for the fight, and I think it was a lucky punch. It may happen to anyone, and no one is safe there,” Magomedsharipov said.

It is Umar's first finish loss and just his second defeat in his career. The first loss came in the bantamweight title fight against Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 311. Since losing to Dvalishvili, he secured two dominant decision victories. If he had won against Yadong, it would have been his third straight win, putting him in position to demand another opportunity at UFC gold.

However, the Chinese fighter pulled off the biggest win in front of his home crowd and has called for a title opportunity.

As for Magomedsharipov, he will return to combat sports at ACBJJ 22 on August 30. He was originally scheduled to make his combat sports return against Raul Rosas Jr. at ACBJJ 21, but withdrew due to injury.
