Abraham Bably suffered his second consecutive defeat on the PFL global circuit at PFL Chicago 2, raising questions about his future. With the former PFL Africa Heavyweight Champion still searching for his first global victory, Bably has several options to consider as he looks to get his career back on track.

Abraham Bably's Next Move After PFL Chicago 2

'The One and Only' Abraham Bably entered the 2025 PFL Africa season looking to establish himself in the heavyweight division, having already gained experience competing in the PFL system. The English-Ivorian fighter made the most of the opportunity, securing three consecutive first-round finishes to become the inaugural PFL Africa Heavyweight Tournament Champion.

His championship run earned him the title and positioned him for an opportunity on the global circuit. However, his subsequent transition to light heavyweight has not produced the results he would have hoped for.

Bably made his light heavyweight debut against 2022 PFL Light Heavyweight Tournament Champion Rob Wilkinson at PFL San Diego in June 2026, suffering a second-round stoppage loss. He returned to action at PFL Chicago 2 on October 16, but 2019 PFL Light Heavyweight Tournament Champion Emiliano Sordi handed him another second-round defeat.

Now having an 8-4 professional record, Bably must decide how to move forward in the best way for his career. There are a couple of options that could serve him well for his next move.

Should Abraham Bably Stay at Light Heavyweight?

Bably's decision to move down to light heavyweight was inspired by his admiration for boxing legend Mike Tyson. Following a split-decision loss to Rodrigo Nascimento in May 2025, Bably reconsidered his future at heavyweight and began exploring the idea of competing at a lower weight.

Bably believed that moving down could allow him to combine his punching power with greater speed and athleticism. Rather than viewing the move as a retreat from heavyweight, Bably saw it as an opportunity to develop a different dimension of his game.

Despite the losses at light heavyweight, Bably does not necessarily need to abandon his plans after just two fights. The 205-pound division could still offer him opportunities to establish himself, and his reasoning for making the move remains relevant. Two defeats early into the light heavyweight run do not mean the move is necessarily the wrong fit.

Remaining at light heavyweight would give Bably an opportunity to continue pursuing the vision that prompted his move in the first place. With time to adjust and more experience against other names in the division, he could still find the success he anticipated.

The downside, however, is that another defeat would extend his losing streak and raise more questions about whether the transition has benefited him. But Bably would need to approach his next light heavyweight bout with a clear plan for moving forward rather than simply hoping for a different result.

A Return to Heavyweight Could Revive Bably's Momentum

Another option for Bably would be to return to heavyweight, the division in which he enjoyed his most recent success.

His 2025 PFL Africa campaign showed Bably's ability to finish opponents and build momentum. Three first-round stoppage victories secured him the tournament championship, and Bably was consistently the highlight of the events he was part of.

Returning to heavyweight on the global circuit could provide an opportunity to build on that experience. Rather than starting over in a new division, Bably could revisit the weight class that made him a tournament champion and attempt to translate that success to a higher level of competition.

A move back up to 265 pounds would not automatically guarantee better results. Bably's previous heavyweight losses show that the division also presents challenges, and his PFL Africa success does not necessarily mean he would dominate the global heavyweight roster.

Bably has already demonstrated that he can put together a successful run in the heavyweight division, and returning to familiar territory could give him an opportunity to rediscover that momentum.

Could a Return to PFL Africa Be The Answer?

Bably's third option would be to return to the African circuit, where he became the inaugural PFL Africa Heavyweight Champion.

The 2026 PFL Africa Finals are set to take place in Kigali, Rwanda, on December 12, and this could present an interesting opportunity for 'The One & Only'. Whether at heavyweight or light heavyweight, a showcase bout on the African stage could allow Bably to reconnect with the circuit that helped propel him to the global circuit.

Bably enjoyed a successful 2025 campaign in Africa, finishing all three of his tournament opponents in the first round. Returning to a familiar environment could provide an opportunity to rebuild momentum and show that he is still a dangerous competitor despite his recent setbacks.

A showcase bout could also give him an opportunity to compete while reassessing his next steps. However, a return to the continent would come with its own considerations. After earning a championship and competing on the global circuit, stepping back into the African sub-promotion could be seen as retreating from the tougher challenges he set out to pursue.

But returning to PFL Africa would not necessarily mean abandoning his global ambitions, especially if the move is intended to help him regain momentum before pursuing another international opportunity. With the 2026 PFL Africa finals approaching, the possibility of a showcase appearance could be worth considering.

So, What's Next for Abraham Bably?

Bably's next move will be an important decision in shaping the next phase of his career. Each option comes with potential benefits and drawbacks, and none guarantee immediate success.

Regardless of what he chooses to do next, Bably remains a former tournament champion with a proven ability to finish opponents. His global campaign has not panned out as expected, but the next chapter remains to be written.

How he responds to this recent setback will be worth following and keeping a close eye on.
