UFC Fight Night 209 Results

In 2020, MMA was finally legalized in the country of France and now two years later, the UFC is making their debut in Paris, France as France’s own Ciryl Gane faces off against Tai Tuivasa in the heavyweight main event while MMASucka provides UFC Fight Night 209 results.

UFC Fight Night 209 Results – Main Event

Starting his career off with a record of 10-0, Ciryl Gane is entering this fight coming off the first loss of his professional career. Gane made his UFC debut in 2019 with a record of only 3-0. Gane won his first two fights by submission with a arm triangle choke win over Raphael Pessoa in his debut followed by a heel hook win over Don’Tale Mayes in his next fight. In his third UFC fight, Gane defeated Tanner Boser by unanimous decision to improve his record to 6-0.

Gane got a big step up in competition following the Boser fight as he took on former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos at UFC 256. Gane continued his unbeaten streak that night, finishing the former champion by TKO in the second round. Following his win over dos Santos, Gane earned his first UFC main event in a fight with Jairzinho Rozenstruik at UFC Vegas 20. Gane won that fight by unanimous decision and followed it up with a second UD win in his second main event against Alexander Volkov at UFC Vegas 30.

Gane had put himself in prime position for a title shot with his win over Volkov and he was expected to face the champion Francis Ngannou at UFC 265. Unfortunately, the fight never materialized and Gane was matched up with Derrick Lewis for the interim title. Gane captured the interim title by finishing Lewis by TKO in the third round of their fight, improving his record to 10-0. That fight earned him the Ngannou fight and he ended up facing the champion at UFC 270. However, Gane could not capitalize on the opportunity and ended up losing to Ngannou by unanimous decision. He will look to stay on top of the division with a win over the streaking knockout artist, Tai Tuivasa.

Similar to Gane, Tuivasa also made his UFC debut with an undefeated record as he made his debut in 2017 with a 6-0 record. In his UFC debut, he finished Rashad Coulter with a flying knee in the first round of their matchup at UFC Fight Night 121. Tuivasa picked up another TKO win in his next outing when he finished Cyril Asker by TKO in the first round of their fight at UFC 221. In his next fight, Tuivasa improved his record to 9-0 by picking up his first win by decision when he defeated former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski at UFC 225.

After the Arlovski win, Tuivasa suffered a streak of losses as he lost his next three in a row. The first of those losses was a TKO loss to Junior dos Santos in the second round of Tuivasa’s first main event at UFC Fight Night 142. Tuivasa suffered his second loss at UFC 238 when he lost by unanimous decision to Blagoy Ivanov. The third loss that Tuivasa suffered was second round TKO loss to Sergey Spivak at UFC 243.

Since that losing streak, Tuivasa has been able to rebound in a big way. Tuivasa did not return to the octagon after the Spivak loss until a year later when he faced Stefan Struve at UFC 254. Tuivasa snapped his losing streak in that fight, knocking Struve out in the final second of round one. Tuivasa then won his next outing, picking up another finish with a first round TKO win over Harry Hunsucker at UFC Vegas 22.

He extended his win streak to three in a row with another first round finish, this time over Greg Hardy by first round knockout at UFC 264. In his two most recent outings, Tuivasa picked up two more knockout wins over Augusto Sakai at UFC 269 and Derrick Lewis at UFC 271. Tuivasa hopes to pick up his sixth win in a row when he takes on Gane and if he does so, a matchup with the heavyweight champion could be next for him.

UFC Fight Night 209 Results – Co-Main Event

In Saturday’s co-main event, the top two middleweight contenders face off as former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker takes on Marvin Vettori.

After putting together nine straight wins from 2014-2018, Whittaker became UFC middleweight champion. He did so following a series of fights against Yoel Romero in which he won by unanimous decision in the first fight and split decision in the second fight which was for the interim title. After the undisputed title was vacated, Whittaker was promoted to UFC middleweight champion. In his first title defense, Whittaker faced off against Israel Adesanya who went from UFC debut to UFC title shot in just over a year.

Whittaker ended up losing to Adeasanya in that fight as he was finished by knockout in the second round at UFC 243. Whittaker did not return to the octagon until about nine months after the Adesanya fight when he took on Darren Till in the main event of UFC on ESPN 14. Whittaker rebounded from his title loss that night as he defeated Till by unanimous decision. Following that win, Whittaker picked up another unanimous decision win, this time defeating Jared Cannonier at UFC 254. He picked up a third straight win following the Cannonier fight with another unanimous decision win over Kelvin Gastelum in the main event of UFC Vegas 24. Those three straight wins put Whittaker back in position for a shot at the title and he earned his rematch with Adesanya nearly three years after their first fight. They faced off at UFC 271 and Adesanya ended up defeating Whittaker once again, this time by unanimous decision.

Vettori has also had the privilege of facing Israel Adesanya twice. In his fifth UFC fight, Vettori took on Adesanya at UFC on FOX 29 where he ended up losing by split decision. After losing to Adesanya in the first fight, Vettori went on to win two straight unanimous decisions over Cezar Ferreira at UFC Fight Night 155 and Andrew Sanchez at UFC Fight Night 161. He picked up a third straight win when he submitted Karl Roberson with a rear naked choke in their matchup at UFC on ESPN 10. Following that win, Vettori won two more unanimous decision wins with a win over Jack Hermansson in Vettori’s first main event at UFC on ESPN 19, followed by a win over Kevin Holland in another main event at UFC Vegas 23.

That win streak granted Vettori the chance to fight for the UFC middleweight title and in doing so, he would face current champion Israel Adesanya in a rematch of their 2018 fight. Unfortunately, Vettori came up short once again as Adesanya went on to pick up a second win over Vettori, this time by unanimous decision. Vettori has fought since the second loss to Adesanya as he went on to rebound from the loss with a unanimous decision win over Paulo Costa. Now, Vettori looks to cement his place in the division as the top contender with a win over Whittaker.

UFC Fight Night 209 Results – Main Card

Kicking things off for the UFC’s debut card in France will be a featherweight fight between Charles Jourdain and Nathaniel Wood. Jourdain is coming into this fight coming off a majority decision loss earlier this summer against Shane Burgos at UFC on ABC 3. Wood enters the fight coming off a win in his most recent outing, defeating Charles Rosa by unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 208.

Following that fight will be a matchup in the featherweight division between William Gomis and Jarno Errens. Both men will be making their UFC debuts as Gomis brings with him an eight fight win streak while Errens is only coming off a win in his last outing.

The third fight on UFC Fight Night 209’s main card will be a fight in the middleweight division between Alessio Di Chirico and Roman Kopylov. Di Chirico holds a record of 1-4 in his last five fights with the one win coming by knockout over Joaquin Buckley at UFC on ABC 1. He looks to bounce back from a loss in his last fight against Abdul Razak Alhassan by knockout at UFC Vegas 35. As for Kopylov, he is still looking for his first UFC win after two unsuccessful outings against Karl Roberson and Albert Duraev.

Finally, before Saturday’s co-main event will be another middleweight fight as Nassourdine Imavov takes on Joaquin Buckley. Coming into the fight, Imavov has won his last two in a row with back to back second round TKO wins over Ian Heinisch at UFC Vegas 32 and Edmen Shahbazyan at UFC 268. Buckley will also be entering the fight with a win streak of his own as he has won his last three straight fights. After the previously mentioned loss to Di Chirico, Buckley rebounded with a knockout win over Antonio Arroyo at UFC Vegas 37. That was followed by a split decision win over Abdul Razak Alhassan at UFC Vegas 48 and a TKO win over Albert Duraev at UFC on ESPN 37.
