Alex Pereira Breaks Silence on Split With Tracy Cortez, Reflects on What Went Wrong

While his fists have done most of the talking in the UFC, Alex Pereira had fans talking after the Brazilian was seen alongside UFC fighter Tracy Cortez.
The pair surprised the MMA world when they made their relationship public at the start of the year, only for it to end less than two weeks later. Since then, both fighters have largely stayed quiet, allowing speculation to fill the void. Now, Pereira has finally addressed the breakup in his own words.
Alex Pereira Shares Why Relationship with Tracy Cortez Ended
The former two-division UFC champion didn't offer a dramatic story or the usual blame game usually associated with estranged partners. Instead, the Brazilian spoke calmly about why the relationship came to an end, while making it clear that there is no bad blood between them.
His comments provide the first real insight into one of the most talked-about relationships in the MMA community this year.
Speaking to ALF Global, the 38-year-old explained that the split was ultimately a mutual decision, though he acknowledged that the two weren't on the same page about what they wanted from the relationship.
"We mutually agreed to go our separate ways. I didn't agree with some things. Maybe she's not ready for a serious relationship. I decided to leave, and that's alright. I wish her all the best."
No Drama Between Alex Pereira, Tracy Cortez Amid Split
While the Brazilian hinted that differing expectations played a role, he stopped well short of criticizing the UFC flyweight. In a longer version of his comments, “Poatan” emphasized that he harbors no resentment toward the UFC flyweight and hopes she succeeds in both her career and personal life.
Rather than revisiting the details of what went wrong, "Poatan" appeared more interested in drawing a respectful line under the relationship.
In fact, it was a measured response that contrasted with the speculation that had surrounded the breakup ever since the pair deleted photos together and confirmed their split on social media earlier this year.
The relationship itself was brief but generated enormous attention. Pereira and Cortez became one of the UFC's most unexpected couples after sharing photos together during New Year's celebrations. Given both fighters' popularity, fans quickly embraced the pairing, making the sudden breakup all the more surprising just days later.
Although Pereira has now offered his side of the story, Cortez has yet to publicly comment on the reasons behind their split.
Both fighters Move Forward as UFC Careers Take Different Paths
Life has changed considerably for both athletes since they went their separate ways.
Pereira has since entered a relationship with Brazilian television presenter Livia Andrade, while Cortez has kept her personal life out of the spotlight. Instead, the American has shifted her attention back to competition as she prepares for an important matchup against Wang Cong at UFC 329.
Having lost two of her last three outings, she enters the bout looking to re-establish herself as a contender in the women's flyweight division. A victory over Cong would go a long way. Pereira, on the other hand, is navigating a very different chapter of his career.
Controversy Ensues After Alex Pereira's UFC Freedom 250 Loss
Earlier this month, the former middleweight and light heavyweight champion suffered the biggest setback of his UFC run when Ciryl Gane stopped him in the second round of their heavyweight clash at UFC Freedom 250.
The defeat not only ended his dream of becoming the promotion's first three-division champion but also sparked controversy after Pereira criticized referee Herb Dean for failing to warn Gane about strikes that he believed were illegal.
Despite the disappointing result, Pereira remains one of the UFC's biggest stars. In recent interviews, he's already begun discussing future opponents, naming Jon Jones as the biggest legacy fight available while also expressing interest in testing himself against Khamzat Chimaev.
