‘Could This Be My Last Dance?’ UFC Featherweight Danny Silva Reveals Life-Threatening Health Crisis

Like many seasoned warriors, Danny Silva fought through the pain and trained, convinced that he was dealing with a rib injury. He sparred, ran sprints, and even went for a three-mile run that evening before his body finally gave out the warning sign. 

What followed was a nine-hour trip through the emergency room, three nights in the hospital, and a diagnosis that left the UFC featherweight wondering what comes next. While Silva is now back home, the 29-year-old knows just how differently things could have ended, prompting him to contemplate, “Could this have been my last dance?”

Danny Silva Details the Terrifying Health Crisis

The 29-year-old opened up about the ordeal in a lengthy Instagram post on Monday, sharing photos from both his training and his hospital stay. The UFC featherweight said the trouble began roughly two weeks earlier when he believed he had suffered a rib injury. It was painful, but not enough to stop him from doing what fighters do: carrying on.

He expounded the horrifying experience, “Two weeks ago I thought I had a rib out. I pushed through like every fighter does.” By Friday, he was still training. Silva sparred, completed his road work, and said his team thought he looked good. He mentioned that his left arm and rib hurt, and his teammates tried to help him with cupping and scraping.

Later that evening, he went for a run. “I did 3 miles. On the 3rd mile, my body was shutting down,” he recalled. Even then, Silva pushed himself to finish. “I pushed because I won’t quit on myself, and 3 miles should be nothing.”

When he got home, things were horribly wrong. He noticed swelling on the left side of his neck and chest. Subsequently, a doctor friend urged him to go to the emergency room to make sure he wasn't having a heart attack.

That decision ultimately proved crucial. Silva spent nine hours in the ER undergoing EKGs and CT scans. The results revealed multiple blood clots, including what he described as a massive thrombosis in a vein in his neck. Part of that clot had broken away and traveled to his lung, causing a pulmonary embolism.

“This news has changed my life,” the fighter wrote. He then spent three nights in the hospital before eventually being released.

The episode has understandably left plenty of uncertainty around his fighting career. Silva, aka “El Puma,” has spent years building toward the UFC, improving his record to 11-2 overall and 3-1 inside the Octagon.

But right now, fighting has taken a back seat to getting healthy. “I’m finally out of the hospital, but I have to be on medication for a couple of months. My worst enemy has always been me. My mind is strong. It sucks when something out of your control tries to take you away from your dream,” he wrote.

What's Next for Danny Silva After Medical Emergency?

Silva's diagnosis means there are understandably more questions than answers at the moment. A pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot blocks a blood vessel in the lungs. In Silva's case, he said the clot originated in a vein in his neck before part of it traveled to his lung.

He also revealed that doctors told him how serious the situation could have been. “The fact that I was still sparring and in such good shape just tells me how tough I can be in the face of adversity,” Silva wrote. “Because I’m in such good shape I was able to survive.”

The Featherweight said his doctors told him that many people do not survive an episode like this, though the figure he mentioned came directly from his medical team and has not been independently verified.

For now, Silva is focused on recovery and taking the medication prescribed to him. Whether and when he can return to MMA remains unclear.

In 2023, Silva earned his UFC contract after defeating Angel Pacheco on Dana White's Contender Series. After which, he subsequently went 3-1 inside the promotion, with his most recent appearance coming in March when he defeated Kurtis Campbell.

In the aftermath of the ordeal, Silva made sure to thank the doctors and nurses who treated him, as well as the friends, family, and teammates who stayed by his side throughout. A GoFundMe has also been established to help Silva with the medical costs associated with his recovery, with a $9,000 goal.
