Dan Hooker sees Salahdine Parnasse fight as a path back to title contention
The UFC veteran knows he has fallen down the lightweight rankings but believes one impressive victory could put him back in the title mix.
Dan Hooker has not been on his best form lately. The New Zealander has lost his last two Octagon appearances, was removed from the UFC lightweight division's top 10 and now sits at No. 12 in the weight class. Ahead of his bout against Salahdine Parnasse at UFC Paris on Saturday, Hooker has embraced his current role as a gatekeeper, confident that a convincing victory can put him back among the division's main contenders.
Dan Hooker Embraces Gatekeeper Role
Hooker had momentum going until he suffered a submission loss to Arman Tsarukyan in November 2025 and had his three-fight winning streak snapped. In January, the New Zealander returned to the Octagon, only to suffer a TKO loss to Benoit St. Denis. The two consecutive losses made Hooker fall behind in the lightweight rankings. However, "The Hangman" doesn't seem concerned by it. In fact, Hooker believes that a good performance can change his situation overnight.
"I'm more than happy to play the role that I'm in right now, and the role that I'm in right now is gatekeeping the top 10 of the UFC's lightweight division," Hooker said during Wednesday's UFC Paris media day. "[…] The beauty of the sport is it can change in one single night. You get your hand raised against Salahdine with an impressive fight, and we're back in the mix."
Dan Hooker Wants to Get Back on Track
While Hooker knows where he stands in the division right now, he also understands that his ranking is only part of the equation. The veteran believes his performance against Parnasse will be crucial as he looks to silence his critics, answer the questions surrounding his recent form and begin working his way back toward title contention.
"It's a serious fight to get things back on track," Hooker said. "[…] I need to silence a lot of people, I need to answer a lot of questions, I need to go out there and perform at the level everyone expects of me."
On Saturday, Hooker will look to end his losing streak and deliver a strong performance when he faces Parnasse in the UFC Paris main event.
