Eddie Alvarez states that the UFC should not make a mistake of pitting Ilia Topuria against Justin Gaethje immediately.

Ilia Topuria has hinted at his return to action recently. UFC CEO Dana White has confirmed the same. Now, the popular consensus is to get the ‘El Matador’ fight against Justin Gaethje once again. On paper, the fight certainly looks like an interesting matchup. According to Eddie Alvarez, the fight might turn out to be a disaster.

Eddie Alvarez Details Why Pitting Topuria vs. Gaethje Isn't Good Idea

Alvarez recently doubled down on the growing popularity of the Topuria vs. Gaethje 2 bout. After suffering some brutal injuries, Topuria was expected to take a little longer to come out of his hiatus. But in surprising fashion, ‘El Matador’ seems to have healed relatively quickly. But despite the good news, Alvarez feels that any further immediate damage might prove to be a sorry affair for Topuria.

Alvarez stated, “It could be a disaster for the UFC. Giving him that other shot, Justin and Trevor (Wittman) kind of got his number."

Alvarez also pointed out that it was evident that Dana White and co. are rooting to put the UFC gold on the Spaniard again. But he does need to take time and have at least one fight to settle before jumping into a title battle. And not only Alvarez; Rogan too echoed a similar sentiment just days ago.

Joe Rogan Sends Warning to Ilia Topuria

Topuria had a war with Gaethje. Fighting for the title, the Spaniard was deemed medically unfit to continue the bout following the fourth round. With his face badly damaged, Topuria faced one of the toughest battles in Gaethje. Now, after having recovered from the trauma, Topuria announced his return in just a span of a few months. According to Rogan, such a decision might backfire.

“You gotta be very careful how you recover from those fights. Ilia's a very mentally strong guy, and I think he will bounce back in that regard. There are only a few of those kinds of fights that you can have in your career, and you gotta be very careful how you recover from those. A lot of great fighters have made the mistake of coming back too soon,” said Rogan.

At the moment, there is no set date for the Topuria rematch against Gaethje.
