Khabib Nurmagomedov has revealed the powerful advice his late father Abdulmanap gave him before his iconic showdown with Conor McGregor at UFC 229.

Since 2018, everybody keep talking about Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov fighting. It was one of the biggest fights ever. But even now, fans still get happy hearing new stories about it. Meanwhile, Khabib, the Dagestani legend who never lost, just told a new story. It's about his dad. Talking to Lex Fridman, Khabib shared the advice his dad, Abdulmanap gave right before the big UFC 229 fight against McGregor.

Khabib Nurmagomedov Shared The Advice He Got From His Father Before UFC 229

As per Khabib, before he walked into the cage against McGregor, he wasn’t thinking about the millions watching. He was thinking about one person that was his father. The buildup to UFC 229 was unlike anything the sport had seen before or since. The trash talk, the bus attack, the personal lines that got crossed publicly. Khabib was carrying all of that into one of the biggest fights in history, and his father cut through all of it with a single conversation.

“I didn’t care about the opinions of millions of people watching this fight. I only cared about one person and his take: my father. My father knew exactly where to draw the line. My father kept me grounded mentally. He said, ‘You have a choice. You can either break down and give up, or you can get through it all with dignity, go there, win, and settle it once and for all,’” Khabib said.

Khabib was dealing with something that genuinely got under his skin, anyone watching that buildup could see it. The trash talk wasn’t just regular promotion, some of it was deeply personal and aimed precisely at things Khabib cared about beyond the sport. His father understood that, and instead of telling him to block it out, he gave him something to hold onto instead.

In the fight, he submitted McGregor in the fourth round, then jumped the cage, and the rest is history. But hearing now that his father’s words were the only voice that actually cut through everything else that week, it reframes the whole thing a little.

Khabib Nurmagomedov Says Conor McGregor Had The Hype, But He Had The Real Story

It brought in politics, countries, family, religion and more. He believes people could see that their rivalry was real and not made for show. That is why their fight became so big and is still talked about today.
