Mateusz Gamrot brushes off Quillan Salkilld hype ahead of UFC Vegas 120

Set to face Quillan Salkilld at UFC Vegas 120 this Saturday, Mateusz Gamrot isn't buying into the hype surrounding his opponent. While the Polish lightweight recognizes the Australian as a dangerous rising prospect with an impressive record, he believes Salkilld's wrestling approach could play directly into his hands when they meet inside the Octagon.

Mateusz Gamrot Embraces the Challenge

Although Gamrot has gone 2-2 in his last four fights, his confidence remains as high as ever. Currently ranked No. 8 in the lightweight division, the Polish veteran said he enjoys being in a position where rising contenders want to challenge him. Speaking to reporters during UFC Vegas 120 media day, Gamrot made it clear he believes Salkilld's style is one that suits him perfectly.

"I feel like world champ, brother," Gamrot began. "I have nice number in the ranking and everyone wants to take my number. [...] I invite you to cage. Let's fight. I'm happy to fight against Quillan because his style is perfect for me."

Mateusz Gamrot Expects a Wrestling Battle

Salkilld has looked impressive since joining the UFC. The Australian has won all five of his UFC appearances, finishing four of his opponents while showcasing dangerous striking and explosive kicking attacks. Gamrot, however, expects Salkilld to mix in his wrestling and believes that approach would actually favor him.

"He's a dangerous kid. He's tall, young. He looks strong. Kick-heavy style," Gamrot said. "I need to be careful. But I love when he try taking people to the ground. He's used some wrestling stuff. I hope he's going to keep the same strategy for me because there's going to be lots of scrambles and non-stop action. [...] There's a lot of hype around him, but to be honest, I don't care. I know what I bring to the table."

Whether Salkilld will actually rely on his wrestling remains to be seen. The Australian has already shown he can be just as dangerous on the feet, finishing three of his five UFC opponents with his striking. Even so, Gamrot appears convinced that, regardless of the approach Salkilld chooses, he has the tools to neutralize the rising prospect and protect his place among the lightweight division's top contenders.
