Mauricio "Shogun" Rua calls for rematch against Glover Teixeira
The former UFC champion wants another chance after losing boxing match to Teixeira at Spaten Fight Night 3.
Mauricio "Shogun" Rua appears to have changed his mind about the end of his career. Last week, the former UFC light heavyweight champion said he expected to make his final appearance in the boxing match against Glover Teixeira. Now, just a few days after suffering a unanimous decision loss to Teixeira at Spaten Fight Night 3 on Saturday, Shogun has called for a rematch.
Mauricio Shogun Wants Rematch Against Glover Teixeira
After retiring from MMA on the same night in January 2023 at UFC 283, Shogun and Teixeira made their professional boxing debuts at Spaten Fight Night 3. From the start, Teixeira controlled the pace, backing Shogun against the ropes and scoring an early knockdown in the second round. Despite the pressure, Shogun showed immense heart and resilience to survive Teixeira's barrage and was even able to rock his opponent in the fifth round, but could not turn the tide. In the end, Teixeira came out victorious by unanimous decision.
Now, however, Shogun wants another opportunity against Teixeira. Taking to social media, the Brazilian posted a video calling for a rematch at the next Spaten Fight Night and explained why he believes he deserves another chance.
"Because a true warrior never gives up," Shogun said. "Guys, I think the fairest thing would be a rematch between me and Glover at the next Spaten. Because it was a great fight, you guys saw it. I got knocked down in the second round, and in the fifth round Glover was pretty rocked. So I think I deserve a rematch at the next Spaten Fight Night. What do you think? And Glover, are you up for one more?"
Mauricio Rua Changes Stance on Retirement
During the buildup to the matchup, Shogun revealed that he did not expect to compete again after the boxing match. However, the former UFC champion now appears to have reconsidered his stance after his performance against Teixeira.
Although Shogun had indicated that he had no intentions of competing after this fight, Teixeira had already made it clear that this would not be his final appearance. Now, with Shogun having a change of heart, a rematch between the two former UFC champions could become an option. At this time, however, Teixeira has not responded to Shogun's callout.
