Sean Strickland claims he would easily defeat Zuffa Boxing cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia in a boxing match, despite the Australian’s unbeaten record.
Sean Strickland has his eyes firmly on Jai Opetaia, boldly claiming that he could take down the current Zuffa Boxing Cruiserweight Champion if the chance arises. The UFC fighter threw down the gauntlet while chatting about a possible transition into boxing, showing no fear of stepping up to challenge one of the sport’s undefeated champions.
“Fine, I'll go to Zuffa. I'll go beat your cruiserweight champ, easy,” Strickland said, as shared in a post by MMA UP on Instagram.
Strickland Makes Bold Claim About Opetaia Matchup
Strickland's bold confidence opens the door to a hypothetical clash between an established MMA fighter and a boxer who has dedicated his career to perfect the art and science of boxing. While Strickland is recognized for his relentless striking and solid defense in the Octagon, a boxing match would require him to operate under a different set of rules against a specialist.
The American's remarks also bring Zuffa Boxing into the conversation. The promotion's cruiserweight title is currently held by Opetaia, who won the inaugural championship with a unanimous decision over Brandon Glanton back in March. The Australian truly dominated that fight, with all three judges scoring it an impressive 119-106.
Jai Opetaia’s Boxing Record Presents a Major Challenge
Opetaia has carved out an impressive unbeaten record and established himself as one of the top contenders in the cruiserweight division. His track record includes world-title wins and a reputation for blending technical boxing with serious knockout power.
This background makes Strickland's claim a bold one, especially given the difference between MMA striking and professional boxing. Strickland has competed at the highest level of mixed martial arts, while Opetaia has devoted his entire career to boxing.
For now, Strickland's comments serve as a challenge rather than a confirmed fight. Whether Zuffa Boxing would consider booking the fight does spark an interesting question: could Strickland's striking hold up against an elite, specialized boxer like Opetaia?
