Zuffa boxing is already making a splash in the world of professional boxing. After signing Jai Opetaia, it was clear that they meant business. On Friday night, however, they made their biggest splash to date.

In a shocking turn of events, Conor Benn has turned his back on the man who went to war for him with the media, Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing to sign with Dana White, the Saudi’s and Zuffa Boxing. A huge statement, a disruption and a declaration of war against Matchroom and the traditional boxing promoters from the new kid on the block, Zuffa Boxing.

Zuffa Boxing and Dana White vs Matchroom and Eddie Hearn

Zuffa Boxing Entice Conor Benn Away from Eddie Hearn

Sat in a hotel room, devastated after his golden goose, someone that he put his reputation on the line for and someone that he lent “hundreds of thousands of pounds” to, signed for his rival, Eddie Hearn, for once, looked like a broken man.

A veteran of the promotional game, Hearn is often the man to take no prisoners. He gets what he wants, evidenced in the signature of Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez after the flyweight king was almost enticed away to Zuffa Boxing. Rarely does Hearn not come out on top, but once in a while, it happens – Consider this move, once in a while.

Conor Benn was enticed away from Hearn and Matchroom for, reportedly, a one-fight, eight-figure deal. Interestingly, despite putting his neck on the line multiple times for Benn, Hearn wasn’t gifted the opportunity to send Benn a counteroffer. He was informed of his fighter leaving his promotion to sign with his bitter rival via email.

Not only this, but Benn, a man who, up to now, owes his career to Hearn, refused a phone call with his former promoter. Shady work in a shady industry.

What Benn’s Signature Means to Boxing

Conor Benn signing with Zuffa Boxing is more than just a boxer signing with a promotion. It’s a clear sign of intent from the promotion that they mean business.

Benn will become a symbol that Zuffa Boxing aren’t here to play, they’re here to shake up the status quo, make headlines, play dirty and make a lot of money doing so.

Why this signing matters is that Benn wasn’t just any old Matchroom fighter. He was the spearhead of British boxing for Matchroom. Hearn’s previous golden ticket, Anthony Joshua, is on his way out of the sport. Katie Taylor announced her retirement this week. Just last week, Matchroom extended its deal with DAZN, and on the promotional poster was… You guessed it, Conor Benn. This highlights just how late Hearn and Matchroom found out about Benn’s departure.

It starts with Benn, but who’s next? Zuffa Boxing’s acquisition of the British star has sent out a warning to every promoter in boxing that they will sign whoever they want and don’t mind stepping on the toes of the more established promotional names to get their fighter.

The Conor Benn signing feels like a major PR win for Zuffa Boxing, and this could just be the beginning of yet another promotional feud within elite boxing.

What’s Next?

Zuffa Boxing is still in its infancy, and yet, they’re already becoming a major player. Rumours of a TV deal within the UK with a major broadcaster are rife, three potential dates within the United Kingdom have been hinted at and remember, this is just the start.

Current promoters will have to tie down their fighters to contracts through fear of Zuffa coming along and ‘stealing’ them away. Fighters will be looking at Zuffa and seeing if the grass is greener on the ‘other side’. What does this mean for current governing bodies? Can Benn fight for a WBC belt, despite Zuffa Boxing stating that they won’t be working alongside the current governing bodies? He’s signed to fight Regis Prograis on the Fury vs Makhmudov undercard for his first fight with Zuffa.

Ring, SELA, TKO, Zuffa putting on a boxing event involving two of the biggest commercial ‘stars’ from the top 2 British promoters, in a stadium, in the British promoters back yard, & not having either of those promoters involved, is a statement of intent.

Boxing is at war.

Dana White has a disruptive style. He shook up and took over the entire MMA game. With the backing of Turki Alalshikh, White and Zuffa Boxing are making statements, have laid down their flag and declared war on Matchroom, Eddie Hearn and the entire boxing game.
