Back at the Apex for the second week in a row, UFC Vegas 70 features a light heavyweight matchup between two of its top ten contenders. Plus, the return of the undefeated Tatiana Suarez on the main card as she fights for the first time since 2019.
UFC Vegas 70 Results – Main Event
Breaking News (2/25/23 4:00 PST) – Nikita Krylov has been forced out of the main event due to illness and Andre Muniz vs. Brendan Allen now serves as the main event of UFC Vegas 70.
Saturday night’s main event sees the sixth- and eighth-ranked light heavyweight contenders as Nikita Krylov clashes with Ryan Spann. Both fighters enter the fight on a two-fight win streak after Krylov finished the year of 2022 with a record of 2-1 and Spann finished 2022 at 2-0.
In 2020, Krylov picked up a unanimous decision win over Johnny Walker at UFC Fight Night 170. About a year later, he lost the first of what would be back-to-back losses when he dropped a unanimous decision against Magomed Ankalaev at UFC Vegas 20. The second of those losses was a triangle choke finish at the hands of Paul Craig at UFC Fight Night 204 at the beginning of 2022. That summer, he picked up the first of two straight wins with a first-round knockout win over former light heavyweight title challenger Alexander Gustafsson at UFC Fight Night 208. Krylov followed that up with a unanimous decision win over Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 280. Going into Saturday, Krylov will be looking for his first three-fight win streak since 2017-2018 as he takes on Ryan Spann.
Back in 2020, Spann picked up his eighth straight win with a split decision win over Sam Alvey at UFC 249. Following that fight, his win streak was snapped when he was knocked out in round one of his matchup with Johnny Walker at UFC Fight Night 178. Following that loss, Spann had gone 1-1 in his next two outings in 2021. He rebounded from his loss to Walker with a first-round TKO win over Misha Cirkunov at UFC Vegas 21. After that, Spann suffered another finish at the hands of Anthony Smith in the main event of UFC Vegas 37. Since that loss, Spann has gone on to win two in a row, finishing both of those wins, with the first being a submission win over Ion Cutelaba at UFC Vegas 54. In his most recent fight, he picked up the second win with a knockout finish over Dominick Reyes in round one of their fight at UFC 281. Like Krylov, Spann looks to win his third consecutive fight on Saturday.
UFC Vegas 70 Results – Co-Main Event
In Saturday night’s co-main event, middleweight fighters face off as Andre Muniz faces off against Brendan Allen. Muniz is coming into this fight with an undefeated record in the UFC as he has gone 5-0 since making his debut in 2019 following two successful outings on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2018 and 2019. He made his debut in 2019 at UFC Fight Night 164 and picked up his first win in the UFC that night with a unanimous decision win over Antonio Arroyo. His second fight in the UFC came about a year later and he picked up his second win by submitting Bartosz Fabinski at UFC Fight Night 176. Muniz went on to finish his next two outings by submission, improving his UFC record to 4-0 with three straight submissions after he finished Ronaldo Souza at UFC 262 and Eryk Anders at UFC 269. In his most recent outing, Muniz picked up his fifth UFC win by defeating Uriah Hall by unanimous decision at UFC 276. He looks to improve his UFC record to 6-0 as he attempts to get through Brendan Allen who enters this fight on a three-fight win streak.
Also a product of Dana White’s Contender Series, Brendan Allen has put together a UFC record of 8-2 since making his debut in 2019. Allen quickly won three straight fights coming off the Contender Series as he put together back-to-back finishes in his first two outings, submitting Kevin Holland at UFC on ESPN 6 and finishing Tom Breese by TKO at UFC Fight Night 169. His third straight win was a unanimous decision win over Kyle Daukaus at UFC on ESPN 12. Allen suffered his first loss in the UFC when he was finished by TKO against Sean Strickland in round two of their meeting at UFC Fight Night 182. He bounced back from that loss with another two straight wins including a submission win over Karl Roberson at UFC 261 and a unanimous decision win over Punahele Soriano at UFC Vegas 32. He would then go on to suffer his second loss in the UFC as he was finished by TKO once again in a matchup with Chris Curtis at UFC Vegas 44. Since that loss, Allen has won his last three fights in a row including two submission wins, one over Sam Alvey and one over Krzysztof Jotko in his most recent outing. The third win was a unanimous decision win against Jacob Malkoun, taking place in between the two submissions. Going into his fight with Muniz, Allen hopes to extend his win streak to four and hand Muniz his first loss in the UFC.
UFC Vegas 70 Results – Main Card
Kicking things off on UFC Vegas 70‘s main card will be a matchup in the welterweight division as Mike Malott takes on Yohan Lainesse. Malott is coming into this fight on a four-fight win streak, making his UFC debut off the Contender Series in his most recent fight. In his debut, Malott extended his win streak to four with a first-round TKO finish over Mickey Gall nearly one year ago at UFC 273. As for Lainesse, another product of the Contender Series, he has made two appearances since earning his contract, going 1-1 in those fights. In his debut, he was finished by TKO in the second round of his fight with Gabriel Green at UFC Vegas 53. Lainesse picked up a win in his most recent outing when he defeated Darian Weeks by split decision at UFC 279.
After the opening matchup on the main card, Tatiana Suarez, one of the more dominant female fighters of the past decade makes her long-awaited return to the octagon on Saturday as she takes on Montana De La Rosa. Suarez was the winner of season 23 of The Ultimate Fighter, finishing Amanda Cooper by first-round submission to claim that title. After that, she would go on to dominate her next four opponents, picking up decisions over Viviane Pereira and Nina Nunes, as well as a submission win over Alexa Grasso and a TKO finish over former UFC strawweight champion Carla Esparza. She looks to pick up where she left off, going back to the flyweight division where she started her professional career as she faces De La Rosa. Montana De La Rosa is entering this fight looking to bounce back from a loss in her most recent outing. That loss was a unanimous decision loss to Maycee Barber at UFC Vegas 52.
Finally, before the co-main event goes down, heavyweights collide on the third main card bout as Augusto Sakai takes on Don’Tale Mayes. For Sakai, this is a must-win fight as he comes into the bout with a four-fight losing streak behind him. Sakai has suffered four straight KO/TKO losses at the hands of Alistair Overeem, Jairzinho Rozenstruik, Tai Tuivasa, and Sergey Spivak. As for Mayes, he comes into this fight with back-to-back wins and a no-contest in his last three outings. Of those wins, he picked up a unanimous decision over Roque Martinez and a TKO win over Josh Parisian before the no-contest in his most recent outing. In that fight, it was originally ruled a split decision win for his opponent, Hamdy Abdelwahab, but it was then overturned to a no contest due to a positive drug test from Abdelwahab.
