Alexander Volkanovski Reveals What Could Bring His Legendary UFC Career to an End

Alexander Volkanovski reveals that significant damage against Movsar Evloev could prompt retirement as he weighs his UFC future.
Alexander Volkanovski is still competing at the top of his game, but the UFC featherweight champ is well aware that his legendary career won't last forever. With another title defense on the horizon, the Australian is being strategic about his future, admitting that the damage he absorbs in the Octagon could play a big role in whether he continues fighting or hangs up his gloves for good.
In a recent interview, Volkanovski shared that his decision will hinge on how his next fight unfolds. Instead of committing to a fixed retirement timeline, the 38-year-old plans to evaluate his health after the match before deciding if he is ready to take on another challenge..
Volkanovski Could Retire Depending on Damage Against Movsar Evloev
“If I take a lot of damage in this fight, all right, we’ll call it a day,” Volkanovski said. “I’m not looking to regain the title right now.”
He continued, “For me, cut damage. All right, I’m going to be happy. I’m done. I’m sort of taking each fight as I go, and I’m weighing those options. I’m choosing to keep going and going great.”
Volkanovski is set to defend his featherweight title against undefeated contender Movsar Evloev at UFC 333 on October 24. The matchup represents yet another significant challenge for the champion, who climbed back to the top of the division after defeating Diego Lopes for the vacant title at UFC 314 in April 2025. He subsequently beat Lopes again in January 2026, successfully defending his belt.
Featherweight Champion Continues to Build His Legacy
Volkanovski had already established himself as one of the greatest fighters in featherweight history. His impressive championship journey features victories over elite opponents such as Max Holloway, Brian Ortega, and Yair Rodriguez, helping solidify his reputation as a defining champion in the division.
However, as he looks ahead, it isn't just about legacy for him. Volkanovski has been vocal about the need to protect his health and the desire to enjoy life with his family once his fighting days are over.
For now, retirement isn't set in stone. If he comes out of this upcoming bout with Evloev relatively unscathed, he might continue defending his title. However, if the bout takes a toll on him, he has made it clear that he is prepared to walk away.
