Ilia Topuria on One Lesson He's Learned From Divorce

Ilia Topuria reveals the biggest lesson he learned from his divorce and how the personal setback shaped his mindset before UFC Freedom 250.
Coming to UFC Freedom 250, Ilia Topuria had to accept defeat against Justin Gaethje. After a brutal fight, the Georgian-Spanish fighter lost by a fourth-round knockout to the American fighter. Before this, Topuria faced another upheaval in his personal life.
The former two-division champion and his ex-wife, Giorgina Uzcategui, separated in August 2025. The split involved a contentious legal battle. Following that, the couple resolved their divorce through an out-of-court settlement in early February.
Now, months after his divorce, âEl Matadorâ has opened up about the biggest lesson that his divorce has taught him. "You might laugh at this, but the greatest thing I've learned is to listen to my mother. Because mothers have an intuition, and they see things that we don't,â said Topuria.
He further added, âWhen your mother tells you that something isn't right, no matter how clear it seems to you, it isn't. I've learned to listen to my mother. I love you, Mom.â
The 29-year-old MMA fighter also opened up about how the situation turned out to be extremely hard for him. The situation became painful for Topuria especially because he was used to waking up every morning and being with his children. But suddenly, everything changed.
Ilia Topuria Reflects on Divorce that Unfolded Under Public Scrutiny
After resolving his separation with his ex-wife Georgina Uzcategui, Ilia Topuria opened up about the emotional toll of the divorce for the first time in mid-2026. In an interview with CBS on June 12, Topuria shared, âI learned so many things. We see the faces but don't know the hearts.â
His divorce played out in the spotlight. Reflecting on how he had to face the challenges, âEl Matadorâ added, âYeah, of course it is , because when everyone is talking about your personal relationships, it's not only about me. It's about my kids and my family. When you have these things involved in social media, and when everyone is giving their opinion, it's tough.â
âIt's a learning opportunity. It's an experience. It is what it is. I always try to have a good approach to things like this. I had to live it. There are always two options: to live it in a bad or good way,â he further added.
Currently, Topuria is recovering from facial injuries that he sustained after his fight against Justin Gaethje. While his exact return timeline still remains unclear, he is taking time to heal and come back stronger for his next bout.
