UFC 272 Results

On Saturday night, one of the biggest UFC rivalries of the year will go down in the main event while MMASucka provides live UFC 272 results throughout the evening. In the main event, former training partners turned foes, Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal, face off in a five round non-title fight.

UFC 272 Results – Main Event

Since he won the interim welterweight title in 2018 against Rafael dos Anjos, Covington has since put together a record of 2-2. Upon winning the interim title, Covington was unable to get his immediate title shot as he would not have been ready by the date the UFC gave him because of a recent surgery. So Darren Till got the title shot while Covington sat out for more than a year.

Covington returned in August 2019 when he won a one sided unanimous decision over former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler. His win over Lawler was his seventh win in a row and it would grant him his first undisputed title shot as he took on the champion Kamaru Usman at UFC 245. Covington came up short in that fight, losing to Usman in the fifth round as Usman finished him by TKO.

About nine months later, Covington made his next appearance as he took on former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley in the main event of UFC Fight Night 178. Covington bounced back with a win that night, finishing Woodley in the fifth round by TKO after Woodley suffered a rib injury. That win earned Covington another chance at Kamaru Usman in his next fight as he fought the champion in his most recent fight at UFC 268. Covington came up short once again in that fight as Usman defeated him by unanimous decision.

As for Masvidal, he enters this fight with a record of 3-2 in his five most recent outings. In 2019, he had himself a year, going 3-0 that year with three straight KO/TKOs. Following back-to-back losses to close out his year in 2017, Masvidal took more than a year off from competition.

When he returned in 2019, his first match-up that year was against Darren Till in the main event of UFC Fight Night 147. In the second round of that fight, Masvidal finished the fight by knockout. In his next outing that year, Masvidal faced MMA veteran and UFC newcomer Ben Askren at UFC 239. It only took five seconds for Masvidal to win that fight by knockout as he rushed across the cage with a flying knee as soon as it began.

In his third fight of 2019, Masvidal picked up his third straight win over Nate Diaz in the main event of UFC 244 as he finished Diaz by TKO due to a doctor stoppage at the end of the third round. The following summer, Masvidal earned his first UFC title shot as he stepped in to face Kamaru Usman on short notice at UFC 251. Masvidal came up short in that fight as he lost to Usman by unanimous decision.

Masvidal then sat out for a little under a year after that as Usman would defend his title against Gilbert Burns after that. Then, Masvidal got his rematch with Usman, with a full training camp this time around. But it did not matter, as Usman won once again, this time finishing Masvidal by knockout in the second round.

UFC 272 Results – Co-Main Event

Going into fight week, the scheduled co-main event was a five round lightweight match-up between former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos and Rafael Fiziev. Unfortunately, Fiziev was forced out of the fight earlier this week after testing positive for Covid-19. On five days’ notice, Renato Moicano stepped in to replace Fiziev as he now faces dos Anjos in the co-main event at a catchweight of 160 pounds.

Entering this fight, Rafael dos Anjos brings with him a record of 1-2 in his last three outings. Both those losses came back-to-back from the last half of 2019 into the opening months of 2020. The first of those losses was a unanimous decision loss to Leon Edwards in their main event meeting at UFC on ESPN 4. Following that loss, RDA’s second straight loss would happen against Michael Chiesa in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 166 as Chiesa defeated him by unanimous decision.

RDA’s most recent outing took place more than a year ago when he defeated Paul Felder by split decision in the main event of UFC Fight Night 182. He will look to pick up his second straight win when he faces Moicano as he looks to make a run for the title he once held.

Moicano will be entering this fight with a slightly better record than RDA in his last three outings as he enters this fight 2-1 in his last few fights. His only loss during that time came at the end of 2020 when he was finished by Rafeal Fiziev at UFC 256 by first round knockout. Since then, Moicano has won his last two in a row. In his only fight of 2021, Moicano faced off against Jai Herbert at UFC Vegas 30, winning that fight by second round submission.

Moicano’s most recent fight took place three weeks ago at UFC 271 where he picked up another submission win, this time over Alexander Hernandez. If Moicano can pick up a big win over dos Anjos, it could quickly push him from unranked into the top-ten at lightweight.

UFC 272 Results – Main Card

Kicking off UFC 272’s main card on Saturday night will be a heavyweight fight between Serghei Spivak and Greg Hardy. From July 2020 to June 2021, Spivak had put together a three fight win streak. Over that span, he picked up decision wins over Carlos Felipe, at UFC Fight Night 172, and Alexey Oleinik, at UFC Vegas 29, as well as a TKO win over Jared Vanderaa at UFC Fight Night 185. In his most recent outing, that win streak was snapped following a TKO loss to Tom Aspinall at UFC Vegas 36.

As for Hardy, he enters the fight with a two fight losing streak behind him. The first of those losses came at the end of 2020 when he was finished by TKO against Marcin Tybura at UFC Fight Night 183. His next, and most recent loss, happened last summer at UFC 264 when he was finished by knockout in the first round against Tai Tuivasa.

Following the heavyweight fight to kick things off, the second main card fight will feature a welterweight fight between Kevin Holland and Alex Oliveira. Holland enters this fight after failing to pick up a single win during 2021 after he went 5-0 during 2020. To start the year, Holland dropped back-to-back unanimous decisions in his fights against Derek Brunson in the UFC on ESPN 21 main event, and against Marvin Vettori in their UFC on ABC 2 main event. In his most recent outing, Holland faced Kyle Daukaus in a fight that ended in a no contest due to an accidental head butt that caused Holland to easily be submitted.

Oliveira will be entering this fight with three straight losses following him. The first two of those losses were back-to-back submission losses against Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 254 and Randy Brown at UFC 261. In his most recent fight, Oliveira lost by unanimous decision to Niko Price at UFC Vegas 38.

Finally, before the co-main event, featherweights face off as Edson Barboza takes on Bryce Mitchell. During 2021, Barboza had put together a record of 1-1. In May, at UFC 262, Barboza picked up a knockout win over Shane Burgos to extend his winning streak at the time to two in a row. After that fight, his short win streak would be snapped as he suffered a third round TKO loss to Giga Chikadze in the main event of UFC Vegas 35.

For Mitchell, since coming off of The Ultimate Fighter, he has won five in a row with the UFC to improve his undefeated record to 14-0. He did not fight once during 2021, so Mitchell’s most recent fights took place in 2020. He fought twice that year, winning both, as he picked up back-to-back unanimous decision wins over Charles Rosa at UFC 249, followed by a win over Andre Fili at UFC Fight Night 181.
